Thinking About Journaling? Some Tips to Get the Habit Started

Journaling is a great way to get out your thoughts, commemorate special occasions, and work through ideas and stresses weighing on your mind. The thing is, it's not as effective if you only do it once in a blue moon. It's a habit you have to keep consistently, but once you do, you'll be able to look back on hundreds of entries and relive those memories.

Whether journaling is a New Year's resolution you still haven't nailed down, or you want to start "just because," here are a few tips to help you build the habit.

Get Organized

Many people find that if they have a dedicated place to journal, sitting down and getting started is easier than if they were to journal anywhere randomly. Choose a place in your home or wherever you won't be distracted and can get down to business. If you have a desk or a home office, desk sets can be a great way to keep your journal tools at the ready and organized.

Perfect on Paper

There’s something to be said for the feeling of writing something out by hand. The way a smooth gel pen glides across the paper creates this connection from your thoughts to the page that makes the journaling process a special experience. Pick up a dedicated journaling notebook and some writing utensils to help record your thoughts. Also, writing on paper gives you some much needed time away from screens, which can be nice so you’re not distracted by apps and notifications and can instead delve into the task at hand, carving out some special time for you.

Set a Consistent Time

Some people like starting their day with a journal entry while others like to wind down by recounting all of the day's adventures. There isn't a correct or wrong time to journal; the important part is to just keep the time consistent. When you write in your journal at roughly the same time of day every morning or night, you’re making tremendous steps toward establishing the habit. After only a week or so you should be in the groove of things, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a journaling pro. And keep in mind it doesn’t have to be an hour-long entry every day either, just write down what you need within the time you need.

Don’t Hold Anything Back

Your journal is for you and for you only. No one will judge you for the juicy gossip you write out, or any misspellings, so let it all out and don't hold anything back. Some people have a hard time figuring out what to write in their journal because they don’t know where to start. And that’s fine. Just take a few breaths and write down whatever comes to mind. When you write in a stream of conscious way, you give yourself a chance to declutter your mind, and after a minute or two, the flow should pick up, and your entry will take shape.

Make It Fun

Last, if you need a little bit of a push to make you want to start every morning with a journal entry, commemorate the start of this new habit with some fun accessories. The sky is the limit and if it will make you want to write, go for it! From gel pens to funky pencil pouches, stationery, cute notebooks, and more, go on a shopping spree so epic that you can use it as inspiration for your first entry.
