How to Get Through the Post-Lunch Slump Without a Million Cups of Coffee

You know those days where you just can’t get it together? You glance at the clock at 1:25 p.m. and wait an hour before checking it again to see only five minutes have passed. Yeah…We’ve all been there, and to put it bluntly: those days suck. But—and there is a “but”—it doesn’t have to be like this! You probably have coworkers who are always super peppy and seem to blast through the day. What’s their secret? No, it’s not a million cups of coffee, and it's also not because they're other-worldly beings—they just know how to stay positive!

Want to be more like them? Do these four things and you'll be amazed at how much quicker the afternoon flies by!

Get Up and Get Moving

First things first, if you’re sitting in the same exact place for hours on end, you’re gonna get caught up in a slump. We weren't made to sit around staring at screens all day—and it shows. If you can convince your boss to spring for a standing desk, do it. If not, make sure that you're taking breaks and moving about throughout the day. Even if it’s just to take a walk to the break room to marvel at the cupboard full of funny coffee mugs.

Pump Up the Jams

That workout playlist you spent hours perfecting? Yeah, you can listen to it outside of the gym too, and it could be your new favorite work soundtrack. If your role allows it, plug in and pump up the jams. Go ahead, stand up and dance if you want—nobody is watching. But if they are, who cares? Whether you're a top 40 girl or a metal head, listen to something with a little “umph” and energy to it and power through those post-lunch sleepies.

Get It Together

Remember how mom always yelled at you for not cleaning your room? Well, we're doing the same thing! You spend seemingly all of your time at your desk, and if it isn't an inspiring, organized space, it's no wonder you can't stay focused. Every artist needs a functional studio, and so do you. So recycle those coffee cups from last week, wrangle those scattered paper clips, and corral your dust bunny frenemies. With a clean, organized space, getting work done will seem easier and bonus, it’s also a great way to kill 15 minutes in the afternoon. A total win-win.

Love Your Workspace

Nobody likes staring at gray cubicle walls all day—who invented those things anyway? So, while you’re in space-organizing mode, let’s get some color and personality in your cell, err, cubicle. Go ahead and put up photos, get those adorable pink pencil pouches all lined up, and bring your margarita maker to work (okay, maybe not that last one). Make your workspace your playground. If you love it, you’ll start to love your work even more.
