5 Old-Fashioned Skills Worth Learning

In the modern age, lots of skills and habits have fallen out of fashion. No longer do we need to figure out how to wash our clothes by hand or tie a horse to a stable (unless you work with horses). Heck, who even remembers how to send a fax anymore? Even with that in mind, some things never go out of style, and there are plenty of “old-fashioned” skills worth knowing and learning. Here are just a few that might come in handy.

Cursive Writing

Your grandma is right—cursive still has its place in the world. If you ever want to write a fancy letter or declaration, you’ll want to do it in cursive. There’s just something about those beautiful, hand-drawn loops that tell the reader that the message was crafted with effort and love. You don’t always have to use it, but if you’ve lost the skill since elementary school, it’s worth brushing up on it. Practice makes perfect, so unzip your cute pencil pouch, grab a jotter pen and get to scribbling!

The Art of Small Talk

Have you ever traveled with your parents and been amazed at how they can just strike up a conversation with a complete stranger? Meanwhile, we’re all doing our best to avoid eye contact and stay plugged into our headphones. While the days of conversation in the parlor might be fading, learning how to carry a conversation with anyone at any time isn’t a lost art. No matter how much you might hate it, this small skill is something you should practice and learn to master. You never know when it might come in handy.

Mending Your Clothes

Have you ever gotten rid of a pair of jeans or a shirt because a button popped off? It’s completely understandable but hemming and repairing your clothes can be a huge money saver in the long run, and it’s super easy to learn. With a minimal amount of skill with a needle and thread (threading the needle is the hardest part FYI), you can tackle a ton of little mending jobs and save your favorite clothes!

Navigating Without GPS

Let’s say you’re cruising around Dallas trying to find that one shop that sells the best funny coffee mugs but this time your phone is dead. How would you get there? While we likely always have GPS and turn-by-turn navigation, it’s handy to know how to get around without it—at least in your hometown. Learning to read a map can be daunting at first, but with a little practice, you’ll be zipping around town in no time.

Growing a Plant

Plants give us life, and those little green buddies can literally feed us. Growing fresh herbs in your windowsill, starting a garden, or just repotting a cactus is a valuable experience and a simple way to add life to your space. Watching something grow from a seed to a plant is rewarding and proves that you are a nurturing and caring person!
